Installation of cables
So it’s time to look at the cable label and the job that it does for all concerned, many do think there is no point, we never see that cable again and others think may be just a couple of black lines with a sharpie will do, I know when I come back.
We must also consider not just the installer or the fixer down the line but the customer who may need to find something late one night or over a weekend. Most cable techs will only be working 7 am – 6 pm if you are lucky Monday through Friday, but as we all know most data centers, large companies work 24/7 and may have the need for some urgent changes.
Many of you may know that our background is in cabling and we have installed over 65 cruise ship installation and on average we would only visit the ships every 2 years in dry dock and that is when the previous work came back to its own.
Over the two years many “IT” managers will work on that ship 24/7 and we understood that with changes and problems we always expected to find some funny business around the ship and many times it would have been done in a rush and as all structured cabling guys know, it would stay that way as no one wanted to knock that user off the network again.
Besides installing new cables and fixing damaged or broken data jacks, we always knew that the hard cabling behind the patch panel would be the same, so all the wild patching would be removed and the core cabling and numbering system was still in play. We had to do some re-testing and fix the broken data jacks which had most times caused the problem and the cabinet would be up to speed.
We would go ahead and terminate the newly installed cables into the racks and all would be numbered at the back, front, data jack and the drawings updated, we made a point of making sure all the data information was kept by the “IT” manager and hard copies sent to each department and our own data for that project. Inside each patch panel rack, we would also leave this one rack data and spare labels should other cabling guys come to change anything.
With all the new and old cable labeling check and re-installed if needed, even if we did not make it back to this installation we knew it was in good shape.
